# Auto-Titled Conversations

Every conversation names itself. Studio analyzes your first exchange and generates a descriptive title automatically — no filing, no tagging, no overhead.

Note
The AI generates titles in the background after processing your first message. The title appears silently in the sidebar with no loading indicator or notification.

## Objective

Keep the chat list organized automatically so both Data Analysts and Marketers can find past work by scanning descriptive titles instead of opening each conversation.

## Prerequisites

- Signed in to Treasure AI Studio ([Getting Started](/products/ai-studio/getting-started))
- At least one message sent in a conversation

## How Auto-Titling Works

1. You start a new chat and send your first message
2. The AI processes your message and begins responding
3. In the background, Studio analyzes the initial exchange and generates a short, descriptive title
4. The title appears in the sidebar, replacing the default **"New Chat"** placeholder

## What Makes a Good Auto-Title

Studio generates titles that reflect the topic or intent of your conversation. For example:

| Your First Message | Auto-Generated Title |
| --- | --- |
| "Show me all databases in my account" | Database exploration |
| "Build a segment of users who purchased in the last 30 days" | Recent purchaser segment |
| "What's the row count for the pageviews table?" | Pageviews table analysis |
| "Help me create a journey for cart abandonment" | Cart abandonment journey |

Note
These are illustrative examples. Actual titles vary based on the full context of the exchange.

## Renaming a Chat

Auto-generated titles are a starting point. You can rename any chat at any time.

### Web & Desktop

- **Double-click** the chat title in the sidebar to edit it inline
- Or click the **more** menu on the chat and select **"Rename"**
- Press **Enter** to save, **Escape** to cancel
- Maximum length: **100 characters**

### Mobile (iOS)

Swipe left on a chat in the list, then tap **Rename**.

See [Chat Persistence & History](/products/ai-studio/chat/chat-history) for full details on managing your chat list.

Technical Note
Auto-titling is triggered by a server-side event (`worker_chat_title_inferred`) after the AI processes your first exchange. The title is set via an optimistic update — the sidebar updates immediately while the server confirms the change in the background. If the server update fails, the title reverts silently.

## Verification

- [ ] Start a new conversation and send a message
- [ ] See the sidebar entry change from **"New Chat"** to a descriptive title within a few seconds
- [ ] Confirm the title reflects the topic of your first exchange

## Troubleshooting

| Issue | Solution |
| --- | --- |
| Title still shows "New Chat" | Auto-titling requires a complete first exchange (your message + the AI's response). If the response was interrupted, send another message to trigger title inference |
| Title is too generic | The AI infers the title from the first exchange. If your opening message was broad (e.g., "hi"), the title may be vague. Rename it manually or start a new chat with a specific question |
